Researchers from the Israel Antiquities Agency in collaboration with the Kinneret Academy unearthed the church in the Circassian village of Kfar Kama town.
“The special feature of this church is the existence of three apse-shaped harem, while most other churches have only one. The space between the mosque and the adjacent rooms is paved with mosaic. Vibrant-colored stone combines many patterns but red, black and blue patterns. A special discovery is a small stone crate used to store relics, “archaeologist Nurit Feig, who directed the excavation, said.
The team also found 3 adjoining rooms next to the church. Professor Moti Aviam speculates that the newly discovered church may be related to another nearby church found in the 1960s. According to Aviam, this church is part of a large monastery on the outskirts of the village. The church complex may have important implications for the Christians who settled in the region during the Eastern Roman Empire.
