USCarmen Best, the Seattle police chief, announced his resignation the day after the city council decided to reduce the budget for the force.
“Overcoming this challenge will create new hope for a better future for everyone. I trust everyone will find ways to work together and get rid of personal conflicts and problems. Politics and power, “Ms. Carmen Best said in a press conference on 11/8 when announcing her retirement after two years as chief police officer in Seattle, Washington state, USA.
Ms. Best resigned after the Seattle city council on August 10 passed a decision to amend the 2020 budget with 7 votes in favor, one against. Under the decision, the budget for the city police department is reduced by $ 3.5 million for the rest of the year. Council also spends $ 17 million invested in community safety programs.
Best, 55, criticized the city council for not consulting her thoroughly before making a decision to cut the police department’s budget. The decision forced the Seattle police department to fire about 100 officers, which was the main reason for her resignation, Best added.
At a press conference at the White House that same day, US President Donald Trump praised Best for “doing a very good job”. City council member Andrew Lewis, who voted in opposition to the police department’s budget cuts, said Best’s and officers’ salary cuts had prompted her to resign.

Mayor Jenny Durkan said she regrets Best’s resignation, adding that the former sheriff herself is a person of color and that she understands “the life of black Americans”.
US Attorney General William Barr called Best’s resignation “a lesson to state and local leaders on the cost of making irresponsible proposals to cut police budgets” .
The decision to reduce the budget for Seattle police comes after months of protesters demanding to cut the budget or disband the force. Protests against racism and police violence have erupted across the United States since the death of colored man George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis.
